善用比喻，你的英文會活起來

使用英文時，與其一天到晚去「背」電影裡的idioms (像是中文裡的成語），不如去觀察外國人怎麼使用「比喻」。

比如，Ty Myers是一位Youtuber，他自己是中年人，也提供自媒體教練服務。

他在他的服務頁面裡提到這句話：

" Editing, thumbnails, analytics? It's like learning algebra in your 40s."

中文的意思：「學剪片，弄封面圖，看後台數據？這就像40多歲開始學代數。」

他的意思是是，對許多中年的自媒體新手，搞懂這些東西「真的好難」。

現在換我問你，當你要用英文表達「真的好難」，直覺你會說什默？

It's hard. It's difficult.

頂多再加個程度副詞來強調「真的好難啊」👉 It's soooo/extremely/fucking hard.

善用比喻的好處，就是比喻是挺個人化的。每個人對難的定義都不太一樣，所以可以有各種不一樣的比喻。

比喻，可以幫助我們從抽象、模糊、通用的形容詞，走向具體，創造「秒懂」。

所以與其說40歲後要玩自媒體很難，改說40歲後玩自媒體，就像40歲後開始學數學，難啊。這樣更有畫面跟代入感。

英文有大量的用法，都是用「比喻」去延伸意思的，比如美國總統川普曾在這則社群貼文裡罵電視台NBC。

Their programming is terrible, their management even worse.

They are an arm of the Democrat Party.

川普維持一慣罵人喜歡用直接、萬用的單字：terrible。一個單字量不高的總統。

這裡說They (NBC) are an arm of the Democrat Party，電視台是民主黨的一條胳膊？這是比喻，也就是NBC是民主黨的打手，是挺民主黨的。

在英文裡，“an arm of …” 通常用來比喻一個組織的延伸、附屬或工具。意思就是這個媒體（NBC）並不獨立，而是像民主黨的「分支機構」或「打手」，專門替民主黨服務、推廣立場。

所以，Trump 這裡用 an arm of the Democrat Party 是一種比喻性的抨擊，是在罵 NBC 偏頗、不獨立。

好比喻v.s.壞比喻

好的比喻跟壞比喻的差別在於「關聯性」「共鳴感」「簡單直接無需再說明」

1. 關聯性高 (Relevance)

比喻的來源要跟主題有直接連結，聽的人才能「秒懂」。

• ✅ 好例子：
  Understanding my company’s expense policy is like reading IKEA instructions without the pictures.
  搞懂公司報銷規定就像看 IKEA 的說明書卻沒有圖片一樣。
• ❌ 壞例子：
  Understanding my company’s expense policy is like juggling flamingos.
  搞懂公司報銷規定就像拋接火烈鳥一樣。

2. 經驗共鳴 (Shared Experience)

要用大多數人都曾經歷過或能想像的情境。

• ✅ 好例子：
  Keeping up with emails is like playing whack-a-mole.
  回覆電子郵件就像在玩打地鼠一樣。
• ❌ 壞例子：
  Keeping up with emails is like decoding ancient Mayan scripts.
  回覆電子郵件就像在解讀古代馬雅文一樣。

3. 畫面感強 (Vividness)

比喻要能立刻喚起清楚的心智畫面，而不是模糊或抽象的場景。

• ✅ 好例子：
  Monday meetings are like forcing yourself to laugh at your ex’s wedding.
  星期一的會議就像被迫在前任的婚禮上假裝大笑一樣。
• ❌ 壞例子：
  Monday meetings are like a philosophical puzzle.
  星期一的會議就像一個哲學謎題一樣。

4. 簡單明瞭 (Simplicity)

比喻要短、直白，聽了就能懂，不需要再解釋。

• ✅ 好例子：
  Learning Excel shortcuts is like finding a light switch in a hotel room.
  學 Excel 快捷鍵就像在飯店房間裡找電燈開關一樣。
• ❌ 壞例子：
  Learning Excel shortcuts is like solving a Rubik’s cube while blindfolded in a moving car.
  學 Excel 快捷鍵就像在移動的車裡被蒙著眼還要解魔術方塊一樣。
